Improving homes in Gateshead
The Gateshead Housing Company is spending over £1m a week on improvements to thousands of homes across Gateshead.
It means that for every hour of every working day a home is brought up to, and beyond, the Decent Homes Standard.
What is Decent Homes
Decent Homes is a Government target that aims to bring all social rented homes up to a decent standard by 2012.
According to the Government, "A Decent Home is one that is wind and weather tight, warm and has modern facilities."
In order to meet this standard, properties must:
- Meet the current statutory minimum standard for housing
- Be in a reasonable state of repair
- Have reasonably modern facilities
- Have a reasonable degree of thermal comfort.
Our customers felt that the Decent Homes standard did not meet their requirements for their home.
As a result, we have developed the Gateshead Standard. This takes properties up to and beyond the Government's basic Decent Homes requirements.
