  Young Woman Entering Multi-Storey Block

Under the Housing Act 1996, local councils can "allocate" accommodation and provide a secure tenancy in their own stock or nominate someone to a housing association. The Council will have a policy for allocating accommodation and have priorities that central government require them to meet.

Anyone over the age of 18 will be considered for Council housing. However young people 16-18 years old can be offered a tenancy in Gateshead with support.

To apply for council housing you will need to fill out an application form.

You can get the application form from the Civic Centre or any local housing office More information.

If you are not sure how to fill in your form you can ask the staff for help at the above places.

Once you have handed in your application form you may be invited for an interview to talk about your needs.

Your application will be assessed according to your personal circumstances to establish which band you are in.

Once you have received your registration Number and Pin you can start bidding for a home / flat.

What do you get?
If you successfully bid and are offered accommodation, unless you have asked for the furnished option, you will offered an empty property with no furnishings, no curtains and it probably won’t have carpets.

All properties will meet our lettings standard (see link below for details), which is a basic standard of repair and maintenance. Depending on our judgment of the decoration and state of the property you may receive some decoration vouchers to buy paint and equipment. Ask at your local office for more details or click on the link below

More Information On Council Housing

What is a Housing Association?
Housing Associations are non-profit making organisations (also called 'Registered Social Landlords') and provide housing for people to rent. In the past, Councils used to build and manage their own housing estates to provide affordable accommodation for people. Today not many Councils now build their own accommodation. Instead they help Housing Associations in acquiring, leasing or building low cost homes. In return the Council gets the right to put forward a person from its waiting list to be housed in the property. The Council's waiting list is known as the 'Housing Register'.
