Homeless

Homeless - What to do and where to go

If you find yourself homeless you will need to find somewhere to stay as soon as possible.  Family or friends may be able to put you up for a short while. Alternatively contact the housing options team to find more settled accommodation.

Gateshead Council's Housing Options Team, Gateshead Council, Civic Centre, Regent Street, Gateshead NE8 1HH. Telephone 0191 433 2612

The Housing Options Team at the Civic Centre will be able to give you advice and information on accommodation and support available locally.  Depending on your situation they may have a duty to find you temporary accommodation. If you are homeless through no fault of your own and are in one of the following "priority need" groups, the Homelessness Team will have to find you somewhere to live.

or a person who used to be in the care of the local authority
or a person who used to be in the armed forces
or some people who have either been in prison, remanded in custody or committed for contempt of court
or people fleeing violence or threats of violence

A vulnerable person could also be someone who is less able to fend for themself than other people would be in the same situation. Housing Options Team, Telephone 0191 433 2612 can give you more information.

Leaving care

It's often especially difficult for young people who leave care to find somewhere to live. If you have been looked after by a local authority, then you should speak to your Social Worker or Leaving Care Worker about finding accommodation and applying for financial help.
Telephone (0191) 433 3000 for more information or visit http://www.gateshead.gov.uk/Care%20and%20Health/
